What does that look like in practice?

A weekend away, three people. Everyone pays for something, nobody keeps a tally. Here is what WeSplit does with it.

  1. Emma pays for the rental $540.00

split between Emma, Liam and Sarah

  2. Liam pays for the groceries $96.00

split between Emma, Liam and Sarah

  3. Emma pays for dinner out $110.00

split between Emma and Liam — Sarah skipped dinner

What WeSplit works out

  • Sarah owes Emma $212.00
  • Liam owes Emma $171.00

Two transfers instead of five criss-crossing repayments, and everyone is back to zero. WeSplit accounts for who paid and who took part in each expense — Sarah does not pay for a dinner she skipped.

How it works

Three steps, and working out the accounts stops being an end-of-trip chore.

  1. Create a group

One group per situation: a weekend, a shared house, a trip, day-to-day life as a couple. Pick its currency, that is it.

  2. Add the expenses

Who paid, how much, who it is split between. As you go, in seconds, and several people at once.

  3. WeSplit works out the repayments

Balances update with every entry. At the end, the app suggests the shortest set of transfers that puts everyone back to zero.

What you can do with WeSplit

Splitting expenses in real life is never “everyone pays the same”. These features exist for the times when it is not.

Keep the receipts

Attach a photo of a receipt to an expense so the details are easy to find later.

Split a bill item by item

Wine for three, dessert for two, mains each to their own: set exactly who consumed what.

Automate recurring expenses

Rent, subscriptions or utilities: create the expense once and let WeSplit repeat it.

Pay in several currencies

Ideal abroad: each expense keeps its own currency and exchange rate, balances stay in the group currency.

See where the money goes

Break spending down by person, by category or by month, right inside the group.

Keep going without signal

No reception halfway up a valley? The app stays usable and syncs as soon as you are back online.

Why choose WeSplit?

What actually changes compared with a shared spreadsheet or a group chat.

  • 100% free, with no paid tier and no subscription.
  • No ads and no third-party ad trackers.
  • On iPhone, Android and in the browser, with the same data everywhere.
  • Your friends join without installing the app.
  • Optimised repayments: the fewest possible transfers to settle the group.
  • Uneven splits: multiple shares, exact amounts, chosen participants.
  • Several currencies in one group, with the rate kept at entry time.
  • CSV export over any period, and a one-tap nudge for whoever still owes.

When do people use it?

Anywhere several people front money for each other. Each situation has its habits — here is how to handle them.

An expense splitting app, and nothing else

WeSplit answers one simple, tedious question: who owes what to whom. As soon as several people pay in turn, keeping the accounts in a spreadsheet gets old fast: forgotten expenses, sums to redo on every entry, and criss-crossing repayments nobody can track any more.

The app records each expense with its payer, its amount and the people it concerns. It handles uneven splits — multiple shares, exact amounts, people left out of a given expense — because real life is made of them: whoever does not drink does not pay for the wine, whoever sleeps in the box room pays less.

At the end, WeSplit does not just show balances: it simplifies the repayments. Instead of six criss-crossing transfers it suggests two or three that put everyone back to zero. That is the difference between accounts that are correct and accounts that are actually settled.

No more awkward message three weeks later. Free, no ads, no ad trackers, on iPhone, Android and in the browser.

Frequently asked questions

About how it works, the accounts and privacy.

Is WeSplit free?

Yes, entirely. No subscription, no paid features, no ads and no ad trackers.

Do I need an account to use WeSplit?

Yes, to join a group and add expenses: a free account with an email address to confirm. That said, someone can be added to a group as just a first name, with no account — handy for the person who does not want to install or sign up for anything, even though they will not see the accounts on their side.

Do my friends have to install the app?

No. WeSplit runs entirely in the browser. The invite link opens the group on a phone or a computer, with nothing to install. The iPhone and Android apps are there for whoever prefers them.

How do you split expenses with friends?

Create a group, invite people with a link, then add each expense with who paid and who it is split between. WeSplit keeps the balances up to date and works out who owes what at the end, keeping transfers to a minimum.

How do you work out who owes what?

For each person, add up what they paid and subtract what they should actually have borne. The result is their balance: positive, they are owed money; negative, they owe some. WeSplit does this continuously, then suggests the shortest set of repayments that brings every balance back to zero. The maths, with a worked example.

Can I use WeSplit for a trip abroad?

Yes, it is one of its main uses. Each expense keeps its original currency, balances show in the group currency, and the app stays usable when reception is poor: entries go out as soon as you are back online.

Does WeSplit handle several currencies?

Yes. Each expense keeps its currency and its exchange rate at the time of entry; balances show in the group currency. Useful as soon as part of the costs are paid locally.

Can an expense be split between only some people?

Yes, and it often is. You choose who takes part in each expense, and you can split equally, by number of shares (when one person counts double) or by exact amounts, line by line.

Can I use WeSplit for a shared house?

Yes. Rent, utilities, internet and shared groceries live in one ongoing group, with recurring expenses for everything that comes back every month. What gets shared and what does not.

Can I handle recurring expenses?

Yes. An expense that comes back every week or every month — rent, a subscription, cleaning — is created once and repeats on its own.

What is the difference between WeSplit and Splitwise?

Both apps answer the same need: knowing who owes what within a group. The differences are in the available features and in how they fit into day-to-day use, rather than in the principle. A detailed comparison is coming on a dedicated page.

How do people pay each other back?

WeSplit lists the transfers to make, then everyone settles however they prefer: a PayPal link, an IBAN or a bank QR code saved in their profile. The repayment is then recorded in the group and the balances drop back to zero.

Can I export a group’s expenses?

Yes, as CSV, over whatever period you choose. The file opens in any spreadsheet and can be shared with any app.

Is my data sold or used for advertising?

No. WeSplit carries no ads, no third-party ad trackers and sells no data. Usage measurement is first-party and anonymous. Privacy policy.
