A trip, a shared house, a night out, life as a couple: the moment several people front money for each other, someone has to do the maths. WeSplit does it for you.
An expense splitting app records who paid what, and for whom, then works out each person’s balance: what they paid minus what they should actually have borne. It then suggests the shortest set of transfers that puts everyone back to zero. WeSplit does this for free, with no ads, on iPhone, Android and in a browser.
How it works
- Create a group. One per situation: a weekend, a shared house, a trip. Pick its currency, that is it.
- Invite people with a link you send in a message. They open the group in their browser, with nothing to install.
- Add expenses as you go. Who paid, how much, who it is split between.
- Settle up. The app lists the transfers to make, and everyone pays however they prefer.
No step needs preparation: you can create a group at the restaurant table and log the first expense within the minute.
A worked example
Three people, one weekend. Emma pays for the rental, $540. Liam pays for the groceries, $96. Emma pays for dinner out, $110. Sarah skipped dinner.

The balances always add up to zero — that is the check to run when a figure looks wrong. Result: Sarah owes $212 to Emma, Liam owes $171 to Emma. Two transfers, not five criss-crossing repayments.
What actually separates one app from another
They all divide by three. The differences show up in real cases, the ones where not everyone pays the same.
- Uneven splits. Multiple shares when one person counts double, exact amounts line by line, chosen participants for a given expense. WeSplit handles all three.
- Item-by-item bills. Wine for three, dessert for two, mains each to their own: the expense breaks into lines.
- Currencies. Each expense keeps its own and its rate at entry time; balances stay in the group currency.
- Recurring expenses. Rent, subscriptions, cleaning: created once, repeated on their own.
- Export. A CSV over any period, to take the numbers elsewhere.
- Access without installing. There is always someone who will not download anything.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best app for splitting expenses with friends?
The one that handles your awkward cases. If everyone always pays the same share, any of them will do. If your expenses split unevenly, if you travel with several currencies, or if someone refuses to install an app, those are the criteria that decide. The six criteria, in detail.
Is the app free?
Yes, entirely. No subscription, no paid features, no ads and no ad trackers.
Does everyone have to install the app?
No. The invite link opens the group in the browser, on a phone or a computer, with the same features. The iPhone and Android apps are there for whoever prefers them.
Do I need an account?
Yes, to join a group and add expenses: a free account with an email address to confirm. Someone can also be added as just a first name, with no account, though they will not see the accounts on their side.
How do you work out who owes what?
For each person: what they paid, minus what they should actually have borne. Positive, they are owed money; negative, they owe some. WeSplit does this continuously and suggests the shortest set of repayments. The maths, with a worked example.
Can an expense be split between only some people?
Yes, and it often is. You choose who takes part in each expense, and split equally, by number of shares or by exact amounts.
Can I export the expenses?
Yes, as CSV, over whatever period you choose. The file opens in any spreadsheet.
Does the app work without a connection?
Yes. You can log expenses offline and they go out as soon as you are back online. In the browser they are kept even after closing the tab.
