Looking for a Splitwise alternative?
Both apps work out who owes what. The main difference is not what they do — it is what you pay for. Splitwise reserves part of its features for a paid tier; WeSplit is free in full.
According to Splitwise’s own Pro page, the paid tier is what removes ads, lifts the daily expense limit, and adds currency conversion, charts and receipt scanning. WeSplit includes all of that for free, with no ads and no third-party ad trackers — plus one difference more: it runs entirely in a browser, with nothing to install.
What both do the same way
On the core job there is little to separate them, and that deserves saying first.
- Working out balances and suggesting simplified repayments.
- Uneven splits — equal shares, multiple shares, exact amounts.
- Long-running groups, for a shared house or a couple, as much as one-off ones.
- iOS and Android.
What is paid on one side and free on the other
Taken on 19 September 2026 from Splitwise’s Pro page, which describes what the subscription adds to the free tier.
| Feature | WeSplit | Splitwise |
|---|---|---|
| No ads | Always | Presented as a Pro benefit |
| Unlimited daily expenses | Always | Presented as a Pro benefit |
| Currency conversion | Included | Listed under Pro |
| Charts and stats | Included | Listed under Pro |
| Receipt scanning | No, we do not do this | Listed under Pro |
| Bank transaction import | No, we do not do this | Listed under Pro |
| Use without installing | Every feature, in the browser | Not stated on their public pages |
We quote no price. Their own terms say the Pro price varies by country, by date and by current promotions. A figure written here would be wrong for some of the people reading it.
The two things Splitwise has that we do not
They are in the table above, and they deserve an explanation rather than a line in a grid.
Receipt scanning. WeSplit keeps the photo attached to the expense, but the amounts are typed in by hand. If you were counting on text recognition to avoid typing, we do not answer that need today.
Bank transaction import. We connect to no bank, and there are no plans to. Expenses enter a group because someone puts them there — which has the advantage of only letting in what is genuinely shared.
If either of those is decisive for you, the honest answer is that WeSplit is not the right tool.
WeSplit’s other limits
- No balance across groups. Each group is independent: two debts to the same person in two groups do not cancel out.
- No comments on expenses. Discussions stay in your usual group chat.
- Partial offline on mobile. The app stays usable without a connection during a session; if you close it completely while offline, pending entries are lost. In the browser they are kept.

Frequently asked questions
Is WeSplit free in full?
Yes. No subscription, no feature behind a paid tier, no cap on groups or expenses.
Are there ads in WeSplit?
No, never, and no third-party ad trackers either. Usage measurement is first-party and anonymous. Privacy policy.
Does WeSplit scan receipts automatically?
No. You can attach a photo of a receipt to an expense to find it later, but the amounts are typed in by hand.
Does WeSplit connect to my bank?
No, and there are no plans to. Repayments happen by PayPal link, IBAN or bank QR code, then get recorded in the app.
Is currency conversion included?
Yes. Each expense keeps its currency and its exchange rate at the time of entry; balances show in the group currency.
Can I use WeSplit without installing an app?
Yes. WeSplit runs entirely in the browser, on a phone or a computer, with the same features.
