Looking for a Tricount alternative?
Both apps answer the same need: knowing who owes what within a group. Here are the main differences, so you can pick the one that fits how you actually use it.
Both are free and do the same core maths. The differences come down to three concrete points: WeSplit exports expenses as CSV, shows statistics by person, category and month, and runs entirely in a browser with nothing to install. Tricount’s own help centre states that CSV and PDF export was removed with the new app, and that statistics are planned for a future update.
What both do the same way
Start with what does not separate them, because it is most of the work and it saves switching for nothing.
- Balances and repayments. Everyone logs what they pay, the app keeps the accounts and suggests a list of transfers that puts everyone back to zero.
- Uneven splits. Equal shares, number of shares or exact amounts: both handle all three.
- Several currencies. Both let you log an expense in a currency other than the group’s.
- Offline. Both stay usable without a connection and sync when it returns.
- Free. Tricount says « 100% free » on its site; WeSplit is free with no paid tier. Neither will charge you to settle up.
If that is all you need, switching has no point. The rest only matters if one of the points below is missing for you.

« Not stated » does not mean « absent ». Those lines say only that we found nothing on their public pages on the date shown. We would rather write it that way than claim an absence we cannot verify.
Three concrete reasons to switch
You need the file. A shared house squaring up at year end, a trip to re-bill, a budget to pick up in a spreadsheet: without export, it all gets retyped. WeSplit produces a CSV over any period, and it opens in any spreadsheet.
You want to see where the money went. Not just who owes what, but how much the group spent on accommodation, restaurants and transport, and how that moves month to month. That is the statistics tab.
Someone in the group will not install anything. There always is one. With WeSplit the invite link opens the group in the browser, on a phone or a computer, with every feature.
What WeSplit does not do
A page that only lists advantages does not deserve your trust. Here is what we cannot do today:
- No receipt scanning. The photo is kept, but the amounts are typed in by hand.
- No balance across groups. Each group is independent; if the same person owes you money in two groups, the debts do not cancel out.
- No comments on expenses. Discussions stay in your usual group chat.
- No bank connection. Repayments happen by PayPal link, IBAN or bank QR code, then get recorded in the app — nothing is taken automatically.
- Partial offline on mobile. The app stays usable without a connection during a session, but if you close it completely while offline, pending entries are lost. In the browser they are kept.

Does WeSplit handle several currencies?
