Split the costs of your trip, without the spreadsheet
On a trip nobody wants to keep a ledger. Someone pays for whatever comes up — the rental, the car, the groceries, dinner — and it gets sorted later. WeSplit takes care of "later".
Create a group for the trip, invite people with a link, and log each expense as it happens. Every expense keeps its own currency and exchange rate, you pick who takes part, and the app stays usable when the signal is poor. On the way home it lists the transfers to make — the fewest possible for everyone to be back at zero.
The four problems that are specific to travel
Several currencies. The rental paid from home, taxis in local cash, part of the groceries on a card at a rate you will discover on the statement. Each WeSplit expense keeps its original currency and its rate at entry time; balances show in the group currency.
Changing participants. Two people extend, someone skips the boat trip, a couple shares a double room while the others are in a dorm. Each expense splits between the people concerned only — equally, by shares or by exact amounts.
Patchy signal. No data abroad, no wifi at the hostel. Entries made offline go out as soon as the connection returns.
The end of the trip. The moment everyone dreads, and the one where forgotten expenses resurface. Because balances are always up to date, there is nothing to recompute: the list of transfers is already there.
The method that works
- Create the group before you leave, in the currency you want to see balances in — usually the one from home.
- Invite everyone with a link. Whoever will not install anything opens the group in their browser.
- Log it when you pay, not in the evening. That is the only discipline that matters: an expense logged three days later is an expense forgotten.
- Photograph the big receipts. The photo stays attached to the expense, which settles arguments about what the dinner bill actually contained.
- Settle on the way back. Two or three transfers are almost always enough, even for six people.

Frequently asked questions
How do you handle several currencies on a trip?
Log each expense in the currency you actually paid in. WeSplit keeps that currency and its exchange rate at the time of entry, and shows balances in the group currency. There is nothing to convert by hand.
What if someone did not take part in an expense?
You untick them when logging it. They are left out of that line’s split but stay in the group for everything else.
Does the app work without a connection?
Yes. You can log expenses offline: they go out as soon as the signal returns. In the browser they are even kept after closing the tab.
Does everyone have to install the app?
No. The invite link opens the group in the browser, on a phone or a computer, with the same features.
How do people pay each other back afterwards?
WeSplit lists the transfers to make — the fewest possible. Everyone settles however they prefer: PayPal link, IBAN or bank QR code. The repayment is then recorded in the group.
